Windows Vista Event Sounds problem with AOL

I am having a problem with Windows Vista event sound management on a new machine I bought. I added AOL to the machine for my family and changed some event sounds.

When my family logs onto AOL now and highlights an email in their folder or highlights a favorite in the favorites folder, they get the standard default Windows Vista ding sound. I can change this to another sound but I cannot get the default ding (or replacement sound) to stop sounding when an email or favorite is highlighted. This is really annoying.

I can set all sounds to off (mute all devices) and then reset to Windows default sounds and start over to replace sounds, but the ding always comes back when the machine is rebooted. There should be NO event sound associated with this action, but there seems to be a ghost in the machine. Any ideas?

When I dug around in the AOL technical community, I discovered that someone else is having the same problem and had wandered into the AOL Help area in hopes of resolution.

I dropped a note to AOL and they sent me three suggestions to resolve the problem - none of them worked.

Anyone have any solution?

I ran into the same problem after installing AOL on my new Vista computer Try this, it worked for me.

Open the Control Panel - double click on Sounds - on the Sound Tab in the Windows Default Sound drop down list - change the sound called DEFAULT BEEP to WINDOWS MENU COMMAND.WAV - Also, scroll down the list and change the sound called MENU COMMAND to WINDOWS MENU COMMAND.WAV - click APPLY - OK.

Now go back into your AOL mail and open one of your emails, the annoying DING should be GONE!!

WOw!!! Terrific. It worked. Was driving me crazy the ding/pin that started this afternoon.
